How To Fix Minor Tears In Vinyl Flooring

Posted on

Vinyl flooring is practical, durable, and easy to maintain.  Unfortunately, from time to time you may find small tears in your vinyl flooring where chairs have been carelessly scraped back or appliances have been moved.  Here's how to fix minor damage in minutes with a ready-made kit and a little DIY know-how.

What you'll need

  • craft knife
  • vinyl repair kit (available from good DIY stores)
  • masking tape
  • cloths
  • sandpaper
  • hairdryer

How to do it

  1. First of all, tape around the damaged area to keep the vinyl in place.  Use a sharp craft knife to cut away any loose bits of vinyl.
  2. Now use a damp cloth to clean out any bits of dirt and dust that are left inside the vinyl-free area.  Smooth the rough edges with sandpaper.
  3. Next, take the vinyl repair kit and mix the paint to match the colour of your floor, as per the directions on the kit packaging.  A good tip is to put small blobs of test samples onto a piece of clear tape that can be laid on the floor, until you're happy that you have a perfect match.
  4. Paint the inside of the damaged area of vinyl, making sure that you cover the edges of the vinyl too.  Wipe away any excess paint with a damp cloth and allow the area to dry.  If necessary, you can speed up the drying process by playing a hairdryer on a cool setting over the damp paint.
  5. Now add the filler powder provided in the repair kit into the hole and level it off, using the tool provided.  Drip the floor bond into the powder until it's completely soaked.  Now leave the product to work until it has hardened off completely.  The compound will effectively fill in the hole in the vinyl flooring and settle to leave the floor completely level again.
  6. Should the repair appear rough once it has dried, sand it smooth, taking care not to scratch the surrounding vinyl.  Use a damp cloth to wipe up any sanding dust.
  7. Finally, brush the acrylic finishing product contained in the repair kit over the repaired area.  Leave the clear acrylic to dry for about two hours before you allow foot traffic into the room.

You can quickly and easily repair minor tears in your vinyl flooring by using a ready-made kit and a little know-how.  For larger tears or burns, you might need to consider replacing your flooring.
