Maximise Your Outside Space With Carport Decking

Posted on

If you want to maximise your outside space without losing either your garden area or your existing patio, you could consider building up a level.  It could be that the area above your existing carport would make a perfect suntrap with great views that you just can't get from ground level.

Although building a carport deck is not a minor undertaking and is definitely not a one-man job, a competent DIY enthusiast can achieve a professional result in a relatively short time.

If you decide to undertake the project yourself, here's how to do it.

Preparation

The first thing you need to do is establish that your carport roof is suitable to build a deck on.  The area will need to be sturdy, relatively flat and free of undulations and bumps.  Any problem areas must be repaired appropriately before you can get started with this project.

Measure up

It's crucial that you measure the roof accurately as these dimensions will be used to build the decking's supporting structure.  The best method of ensuring accuracy is to take several measurements then average them out.

Frame and joists

  • Cut out four framing boards using the measurements you took from the carport roof.  These boards will be used to enclose the roof.
  • Position each board and screw it into place to form a solid frame.
  • Next, measure the vertical spacing between the frame. Use this measurement to cut the vertical joist beams that will span the roof and provide a robust support structure for the decking.

Install the joists

  • Secure the joists to the frame using long screws.
  • When each joist has been installed, use metal joists to brace the corners of the framework.  This will provide the structure with additional stability.
  • Finally, go over the whole structure with a carpenter's level to make sure that the surface is absolutely flat before you install the decking boards.

Decking

  • If you are going to be installing any wiring or cables underneath the decking, remember to do so before you fit the boards.  This sounds obvious, but it's something that's easily overlooked.
  • Measure and cut the decking boards so that they fit the frame exactly. Then position them onto the joists.
  • Once you're happy each board is perfectly level, drill pilot holes and screw the boards to the decking frame using special decking screws.
  • Finish the job by sealing each board thoroughly with a good quality wood sealant to prevent water damage.

In conclusion

Carport decking can be a great way of maximising the space you have and adding a whole new dimension to the look of your property.  Consult a garden designer or contractor for more ideas on how to make the most of your outside area.
