3 Key Steps to Preparing Your Split System Air Conditioner for Colder Months

Posted on

One of the main reasons that you may have chosen to buy a split system air conditioner was due to the extremely hot weather during summers in Perth and surrounding cities. Though the option of having heating on colder nights is nice, it may not have been the main reason for choosing your specific unit. With that in mind, you may not have studied up on how to prepare your split system air conditioner for swapping from the hot summer months to the colder winter months. If this is the case, here are three key steps that can help you prepare the unit and make a smooth transition to the temperature change.

Clean the Filters and Vents

It may seem like a common step to clean the filters and the vents, but it can be overlooked. In some cases, you may think your vents are clear when in fact they are not. Also, simply changing the filter and putting in a clean one won't always prepare your unit.

The ideal step is to clean and replace the filters with new HEPA filters or even a rinseable filter, to save money and waste later. Then simply clean the vents with a vent cleaning tool that looks like a long brush you would use for dryer vents or something similar. This will push out all the dust that has built up over the summer and ensure that you don't have that smoke like smell when you turn on your heat for the first time.

Clean the Coils

When you go to your home improvement store you will find something called coil cleaner. This is a spray on cleaner that can be used directly on your split system air conditioning coils. It is fairly easy to use. Simply spray on the cleaner and let it set for the duration indicated by the manufacturer of the cleaner. Use a damp cloth and wipe off the coils. This should remove any type of debris from the area. If you have tougher debris you can use an air or water sprayer to remove the rest.

Schedule a Service Call

One of the easiest and quickest ways to ensure that your split system air conditioner is ready for the change of temperature from summer to winter is to schedule a service call. Your service connection can take some extra steps to make sure your system is ready. Some of these steps include a full cleaning as well as a flush of the system and running some diagnostics to make sure there are no issues that will be problems during the winter. This is also an ideal time to ask questions about upgrading your system or if you need to upgrade your system for your home.

These are just three of the key steps to preparing your split system air conditioner. If you aren't sure you want to tackle all of the steps on your own, consider having your technician do a full service to completely prepare the system while you enjoy the results.
