Tips to Enhancing Your Home's Electrical System

Posted on

Your home's electrical system is typically not a major concern unless there is a serious electrical problem that has cropped up. This is why most homeowners will not pay much thought to enhancing their home's electrical system unless they have been specifically requested to do so by an electrical contractor. However, by not updating your system or carrying out any maintenance measures it means you are not taking any steps to keep it at optimal functionality. Here are some tips you could use to enhance your home's electrical system, and subsequently reduce the risk of electrical problems in your home.

Update your light bulbs to LED bulbs

One of the easiest way to cut on energy bills in your home by switching out your incandescent bulbs for LED light bulbs. These bulbs use a significantly less amount of energy when compared to conventional bulbs, which makes them cost effective. They also emit less radiant heat, which reduces the chances of an electrical fire starting in your home due to faulty bulbs. Lastly, they last longer than conventional light bulbs. This reduces the chances of having to deal with flickering lights in your home or bulbs that burn out on a regular basis.

Reset your GFCI outlets

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. These switches are typically located in areas of your home that are prone to water exposure such as the kitchen or the bathroom. The GFCI outlets will monitor the flow of energy in your electrical system. When it detects an imbalance in the hot and neutral poles of the circuitry, they cut off the power supply. This works to prevent electrocution in the event that water has made its way into the power supply. However, what most homeowners do not know is that these GFCI outlets should be tested and reset on a regular basis to ensure that they are in good working condition. All that you would be required to do is press the test button to check if the outlet will trip. Once it trips, you press the reset button to turn it back on. If you try to test the GFCI outlet and nothing changes, then you should call an electrical contractor to determine whether it is faulty and needs replacement.

Install a surge protector for the entire home

Typically, homeowners will install surge protectors for their major appliances such as fridges and computers. However, rather than invest in multiple surge protectors, you should consider having one installed in your electric panel. This will protect your entire house from electrical surges, and you no longer have to worry about smaller devices that may not have their own surge protectors.
