Shower Waterproofing | 4 Step-By-Step Guidelines For Adding Silicone Sealant To Your Shower Tray

Posted on

Waterproofing your shower tray is vital to prevent water from leaking through it and damaging other parts of your bathroom. You must apply the sealant properly to give it a clean finish. Silicone sealant is easily available at most home improvement stores, so you can easily find it for your shower tray waterproofing task. These step-by-step guidelines will assist you in your quest for adding silicone sealant to your shower tray joints.

Apply Masking Tape To The Bottom And Top Of Joints

Make sure that your shower tray is completely dry before undertaking this task because even small beads of moisture can affect this task. Apply masking tape strips on the bottom and top of all joints you're planning to seal around the shower tray. Keep small space between the bottom and top masking tape strips because you will need some room to apply the silicone sealant. This will prevent the sealant from messing up your floors, walls and shower areas.

Apply Silicone Sealant Around The Joints

Cut off the tip of the silicone sealant tube and place it in a caulking gun. A caulking gun is also available at home improvement stores. Make sure you cut off the tip at a slight angle to allow for easier application against the joints. Start in one corner and work your way towards the other for all the areas you want to seal, running silicone beads along the joints.

Push Silicone Sealant Into Gaps

Use your gloved finger or a flat stick to smoothen the silicone tidily against the joints. This action will also push the sealant into all gaps for a complete waterproofing job, while delivering a neat finish. Keep in mind that you may need to apply more sealant beads along the joints once you have pushed some of the sealant into visible gaps. Avoid using your bare hands because the chemicals present in the sealant can irritate your skin.

Allow The Silicone Sealant To Dry

Once you have pushed the sealant into the gaps, follow the manufacturer's instructions for allowing it to dry. This drying time may take a few hours, but it may be best to leave it overnight for a thorough drying process. To accelerate the process of drying, you should ventilate the room by opening up any windows. While the sealant is drying, slowly remove the masking tape.

These step-by-step guidelines will ensure that your shower tray is sealed properly. Once you complete this waterproofing task, you can use your shower once again.
